Sidechain

A sidechain is a secondary blockchain that is attached to a primary blockchain and can communicate with it through an interoperability system. Sidechains are generally not considered layer two systems, as they typically provide their own economic security, may have independent consensus mechanisms from the primary blockchain, and do not post state changes and transaction data back to the main blockchain.
