A cryptocurrency is an alternative term for a cryptoasset that saw more use historically and is generally associated with cryptoassets with monetary utility.

Colloquially, 'cryptocurrency' may be used by some to refer to any cryptoasset or token, regardless of value-accruing utility, despite being technically imprecise.
