8gig intends to further the decentralized gig economy via a tokenized ecosystem, gamification of development and public bounties for work-validation tasks.

Overview

Software as a Service (SaaS) providers, in 8gig’s view, tend to offer niche uses cases, such that IT departments integrating multiple services face increased costs. This disjointness among SaaS providers motivates 8gig’s project, which aims to perfect such failings in technological architecture. IT departments transitioning from systems involving clients and servers to systems involving clients and decentralized networks, such as blockchains or decentralized storage solutions, may lack certain development know-how, and 8gig aims to fill this gap. Freelance developers can monetize expertise on the 8gig platform either by completing sets of development tasks posted and remunerated by paying customers or by developing features for the 8base Serverless Chassis, features that can then be rented out to other users. The Piece of 8 Token (Po8) will be the medium of compensation for developers and instrumental to a reputation system. The company providing the underlying technology for the 8gig platform, 8base, has relationships with the Ethereum Enterprise Alliance, the Linux foundation and are a general member of the Hyperledger project.

Protocol Details

8gig’s primary product is its 8base Serverless Chassis, designed to ensure ease of use and scalability. The chassis is ‘serverless’ in the sense that users can dynamically run code in the absence of establishing their own hardware. Instead, users will be billed for computing resources—hopefully presenting individuals efficiency gains as a result of decreased idle server time. File storage, including automated backups that can be individually recovered— a kind of versioning storage—can be managed quickly and scalably through the GraphQL API. (The API also allows files in storage to be easily associated to programs.) 8gig hopes to encourage platform adoption by improving developer experience; the aforementioned tooling is already prepared for developers and a purposefully designed UX facilitates usability. Similarly, 8gig provides developers the basic tools needed for interacting with a blockchain via smart contracts, which it hopes will ease the challenge of writing programs that interact with multiple blockchains. In addition to completing development tasks upon request, developers can also monetize their services by extending the 8gig platform software, and will be compensated for extending the codebase through fees charged to those using such extensions. These extended elements of 8gig will function as a Token Curated Registry and any proposed extension will require review from a validator.

Asset Details

The ‘Piece of 8’ token will be used to pay fees accrued by developers within the 8gig ecosystem as the development environment—the 8base Serverless Chassis— is leveraged; every completed 8gig transaction will incur a 2.5% transaction fee to be paid into a community pool for compensating arbiters. The Po8 token will also be used to gamify developer experience on the platform. Members with sufficiently high reputation scores can become marketplace curators known as validators, gaining the right to request staked tokens from those submitting proposals to extend the 8gig SDK (which will resemble a token curated registry of extensions). Anyone can challenge a proposed addition to the marketplace with an associated bond, should they doubt the quality or importance of the work. The most highly reputed users can become arbiters in cases of dispute resolution; should the challenge be upheld upon a majority vote from arbiters then half of bond will be rewarded to the challenger whilst the remainder (less a 2.5% transaction fee) will be distributed amongst the voting arbiters. Bond staking with the Po8 token can occur in different modes. Development bonds will be posted by users wishing to commission a particular project and the amount requested by a developer will be staked. Validators can apply to become arbiters by staking an honesty bond and behaving accordingly for 90 days. Any user of the system can stake Po8 tokens with the intention of increasing their reputation score. Those developing on the 8gig platform will accrue fees and can reduce these fees by staking Po8 during the billing cycle.
