March 5, 2020 UK regulators state that BitMEX is operating illegally in the country.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the UK’s financial services regulatory body has explicitly stated that the popular cryptoasset derivatives exchange, BitMEX, is not licensed to operate in the UK. The regulator in a post on Tuesday stated that the exchange is willfully providing services to UK citizens without the requisite license. This notice was accompanied by a similar remark regarding Kraken, although this was later removed and is believed to have been an error on the FCA’s part since the exchange’s futures platform, Crypto Facilities, is regulated by the body. As of February, the FCA is officially tasked with ensuring that cryptoasset service providers comply with the UK’s existing financial services legislation.
