The electric car manufacturer, Tesla, and the sole operator of the port of Shanghai, Shanghai Port Group, have completed a pilot program, examining the application of blockchain technology to import practices. The pilot evaluated whether blockchain could streamline the process of importing goods to the Chinese market. The companies concluded that the test had decreased the release time of cargo and simplified the process for the transferring of ownership once goods were unloaded. Specifically, the program used blockchain technology to share data between interested parties about the shipping of goods. The next steps will reportedly involve using the application in other East-Asian ports and the possible creation of a consortium between shipping companies, although it is unclear whether Tesla will be involved further.
