April 21, 2020 Research papers highlight privacy vulnerabilities on the Lightning Network.

Two research papers published in March and April this year have discovered potential privacy vulnerabilities on the second-layer Lightning Network. The March paper, conducted by researchers at University College London and the University of Illinois respectively, was able to unveil balances on payment channels by forwarding payments that contained fake hashes while also determining payment pathways and the users behind hidden payments. The second paper, published in April and conducted by researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the University of Luxembourg was also able to unveil payment channel balances on the network.
