July 6, 2020 Oxfam Ireland receives a €1 million grant to increase the efficiency of aid payments via blockchain.

The charity, Oxfam Ireland, has received a €1 million grant from the European Commission as part of a pilot project aimed at increasing the efficiency of aid payments through the application of blockchain technology. The project, known as Unblocked Cash, is built on top of Ethereum and has been in part developed by the blockchain services company, ConsenSys, with additional help provided by the Australian technology company, Sempo. The pilot is initially operating in the Pacific Island nation, Vanuatu, and received the funding along with five other projects as part of the European Innovation Council’s ‘blockchains for social good’ prize.
