December 11, 2019 Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s CEO, tweets intention to begin developing an open and decentralized standard for social media.

Dorsey announced that Twitter is funding an open source team, dubbed ‘Bluesky’, of architects, engineers, and designers, to build such a standard, qualifying that he believes it will take many years to develop. Twitter’s CTO will hire Bluesky’s lead. Among the motivations for initiating such a project, Dorsey mentions the increasing viability of decentralized approaches, the challenges Twitter faces enforcing global policies designed to address abuse and misleading information, the lack of alternatives to proprietary algorithms for recommendations and content hosting, and a need to incentivize social media producers based on content promoting health, rather than controversy and outrage.
