May 11, 2020 ECB Board member states that the central bank is evaluating a retail CBDC.

Yves Mersch, a member of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) Executive Board, stated on Monday during an address at CoinDesk’s virtual 2020 conference that the central bank is evaluating a retail central bank digital currency (CBDC). The ECB reportedly organized a task force in early 2020 and plans to publish its findings in a matter of weeks. Mersch commented that a retail CBDC accessible to all citizens rather than a limited “group of financial counterparties” would be a “game-changer” and so it is now the ECB’s focus. Furthermore, while Mersch did not state that the project would use blockchain technology, he did comment that it may operate via a decentralized mechanism.
