September 22, 2020 Christine Lagarde argues that a digital euro could provide an alternative to private digital currencies.

In a speech to the Franco-German Parliamentary Assembly on September 21st, Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Central Bank, stated that the Eurozone was actively exploring a digital euro from an operational and risk perspective. Lagarde further added that such an initiative would not be a substitute for physical cash but could provide an alternative to private digital currencies and thus protect sovereign money, namely the euro, within the Eurozone’s payment systems.
