January 29, 2020 Chainalysis publishes report on current uses of cryptocurrency in darknet markets.

The blockchain analytics firm estimates that over $600 million in cryptocurrency was spent on darknet markets in 2019. BTC is the primary cryptocurrency utilized, with BCH, XMR, and LTC also seeing significant use. According to a second analysis by Eliptic, dark net markets account for less than 1% of all BTC transactions. The most common source of funds sent to a darknet market are P2P and DEX exchanges, which often have less KYC procedures than centralized exchanges.
