August 20, 2019 Blockstream founder Pieter Wuille releases ‘Miniscript,’ a new smart contract language for Bitcoin.

The project was created by Wuille, Andrew Poelstra and Sanket Sanjalkar over the past year and announced Monday via the Bitcoin Developers’ mailing list. Miniscript is a turing-complete programming language and aims to succeed Rootstock as the primary smart contracting tool on the Bitcoin blockchain. Rootstock is a virtual machine operating as a sidechain to Bitcoin, allowing users to convert BTC to ‘Smart BTC’ (SBTC) in order to deploy smart contracts and dApps. It was acquired in 2018 by RIF Labs, who admitted Rootstock was “not enough to achieve transaction processing levels on par with those offered by major payment processors” and began improving upon Rootstock’s technology to develop ‘3rd layer solutions’ such as the Lumino Network instead.
