August 9, 2019 A consortium of 15 countries, including G7 members, are collaborating to develop a cryptocurrency focused AML system.

This technology would be overseen by the FATF and aims to collect and report data on individuals and groups involved in digital asset transactions. Several governments involved in this project have previously taken measures to combat money laundering using cryptoassets, including a Japanese-led G7 initiative to form a SWIFT-esque payment network for cryptocurrencies. Additionally, in June, France spearheaded the creation of an international, crypto-focused AML task force, and Japan created a similar task force comprised of its own financial authorities to combat money laundering domestically.
